Fellowship Pages

The fellowship is open to all over 18 who have in interest in Scouting. Related activities have included assisting both Scouts and the past Venture unit. Non scout related activities have included Pillar Boxing on Dartmoor (twice) and so far, annual participation in the St Albans Rotary Club Cycle Ride, culminating in 2003 with winning the Club/Pub team award.

A trip to Scotland has been proposed, and there is some talk about having a canal weekend late in the year.

16th May 2004 St Albans Rotary Club Cycle Ride

This years team, again called Nulli Secundus consisted of Steve Nicholas, David Carden (not a Fellowship member) and Andy and Martyn Culling. Of the team only Steve was in good health, as back problems, an infected thumb and gout had all caused the other three to doubt their participation at some point in the previous week.

The day of the event dawned fine and proved to stay that way, and not reaching the high temperatures we had seen in some previous years. Ideal for cycling. The team itself proved singularly useless at meeting each other, as Steve never saw, nor was seen by the other three, and at one point, David was waving at Andy and Martyn across a packed field. However they did manage to at least start together.

The route itself is so much on minor roads strewn with gravel and potholes that Andy and David pulled ahead of Martyn quite early on. However Martyn arrived at a junction shortly after to find David immobile with a broken chain. Repair started, was interrupted by the "Bicycle Repair Man" who needlessly fitted a short length of chain of different width. And was then perplexed as to what to do about it! However, ever a bodger, Martyn tweaked the spacing, and pronounced the chain good enough to finnish the event. And so it turned out.

After that, although David and Martyn kept together a short way, they soon separated and from then on, the team members never saw each other again!

Preston (Herts - not Lancs) proved to be a source of "amusement" as some person of dubious parentage decide to remove several direction signs. Both David and Martyn were inconvenienced by this, with the latter claiming he had done at least three extra miles.

All the team finished, although Steve was the only one back in time for a burger - which apparently were nice!

£550.50 was raised for local Rotary charities.

This was sufficient to win the Pubs/Clubs Team award for the second year running, and the overall team award for the highest amount of money raised by a team.

Any photos etc of activities can be scanned and returned, and the webmaster will happily handle any joining related activities.
